12 Living Fossils

OK, I am going to get off this list thing sometime soon, but a certain network's "countdown to the 12 days of Christmas" (that's right, a countdown TO a countdown) has inspired me.

So, here are 12 living fossils (no, Keith Richards is NOT featured). Worth a peek just to see the purple frog.... geez.

Recounting ballots

Check out this article that provides examples of contested Senate ballots in Minnesota. I found it to be depressing on 3 levels...

1. Voters needed to fill out an oval by the name of the candidate they wanted to vote for. The ballots provide evidence that this process proved to be a steep "brain" teaser for some. Apparently Minnesota is Canada's Florida.

2. Each candidate pulled ballots that they feel show the "intent" to vote for them. Each candidate shows a remarkably broad definition of intent.

3. You can vote to say which way the ballot should be counted (for fun only... I hope). I tried to be 100% objective. Either I need to go back to intent school, or many of the other online voters are letting where they want the vote to go color their selection.

Product placement

OK, live TV viewing is dropping. TiVo and DVRs certainly put commericals at risk in the "watch when I want" world. I get that.

But is product placement the answer? Have you been compelled to try a soda just because Batman is drinking it -- hand twisted to fully reveal the logo?

I think a company's people are the best product placement in the social computing world. Make sure they know what your company is about, encourage them to play nice, and get back to the DVR.

Web 2.0 start ups

Here are a few web 2.0 start ups that are doing pretty well in a tough economic times. Most were new to me and nearly all had something interesting to offer.

TroopTube

I quasi-whined about the military shutting down some web 2.0 tools like YouTube awhile back. Well, now in an intriguing step forward - they introduce TroopTube.

It also seems to be driven by a sincere desire to connect those serving our country with friends and family. Good for them. They consider it a "retention tool". Corporations might want to take note.

On the geeky side, TroopTube uses Delve to make the magic happen. Seems like Delve introduces some interesting improvements to search across videos. Video has tended to be an opaque medium to search across - maybe this solution will make some inroads.

Semantic web and the market

Twine is an interesting approach to address parts of the whole web 3.o / semantic web thing. To me, the race is between people (web 2.0) or data/metadata (web 3.0) as the best method to survive the explosion of content and services.

Everyone is a content producer now, more can now be a developer as well. As the pile of all of this grows and grows we have to find better ways to store and search it. A hint for me that this is real - I have to go get a 500 gig hard drive to better support my back-up needs now. 500. Gig.

At a high level web 2.0 is people-centric, web 3.0 is data-centric. In economic(ish) terms, web 3.0 implies more authoritative involvement in the information marketplace. I remain a free market kinda guy and I am buying the hard drive to prove it.

I am cursed

So, fantasy football starts up and I score Tom Brady. I figure this dumb luck will make me look like a genius as the points roll in. Then Tom goes down week one and I lose to what will become a last place team.

I eventually pick up Kyle Orton. Surprisingly enough, Bears QBs are ALWAYS there to be picked up. Started him before the first Lions game, and again, dumb luck makes me look smart... for awhile.

This week I was worried the score keeping system might not keep up with my "Kyle points" as the Lions and Bears met once again. Then Kyle went down and I lost to a last last team again.

As the ancient Chinese proverb so aptly puts it..."Life is sad when Jeff Garica is your best option".

Tweeting towards terror

Interesting article on terrorists using Twitter. I think it is a grim reality that each new capability we get that "shrinks the world" can be used as much for evil as good.

I was also struck by an specific section in the article....

"Twitter has also become a social activism tool for socialists, human rights groups, communists, vegetarians, anarchists, religious communities, atheists, political enthusiasts, hacktivists and others to communicate with each other and to send messages to broader audiences,"

First - "hacktivists" - first time I have crossed paths with that term.

Second - first time I have seen
vegetarians lumped in with socialists, communists, and anarchists. Kinda speaks to me :)

An open letter to the Chicago Cubs

As a life long, Ralph Garr was under-rated, the shorts were not THAT bad White Sox fan, I usually take great delight in the failings and soul crushing results annually produced by the Chicago Cubs.

I was perplexed this year, when after a particularly spectacular collapse, the amount of joy I felt was remarkably lower. I almost felt empathy.

Let's not get crazy... I did say ALMOST.

A friend (well "friend" might be a tad strong - she is Cubs fan) of mine sent me her thoughts on this year. I found it to be a great read, and with her permission, I now share....

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE CHICAGO CUBS

Dear Sweet Lou and the team ~

You brought your 2008 season to a humiliating end on Saturday, being swept by the much-inferior Dodgers you brought up as another one of the kick-in-the-gut experiences to which yours fans have become accustomed … 1984, 1989, 1998, 2003, 2007 … and that's just in my lifetime. As a lifelong Cubs fan, I am forlorn. Heartbroken. Depressed. What's more, I'm mad ... and I've decided I want a refund.

I was at opening day this year, and I was at the NLDS Game 2 ~ so I opened and closed the season with the Cubs. I went to at least nine games, bought at least 30 beers, ordered new gear, used lots of gas getting to Wrigley … worse yet, I lost hours and hours of my life to this season, not just in person at games, but watching on TV, listening to the radio, reading websites ~ not to mention the 3 of my measly 10 vacation days last week alone for the NLDS … Finally, I invested my heart and a significant portion of my liver in hopeful love for this winning 2008 team … and what did I get as a return on my investment? An ulcer and another year of taunts from St. Louis fans. So I want it back. I WANT IT ALL BACK!

Let me know how you're going to make this right. I'll be sitting here nursing my wounds, making plans for all those days I'd blocked out to watch the NLCS and (just maybe) the World Series, and secretly counting down the days until opening day 2009. 182 … 181 …

Sincerely,

Jenny

Searching

Ask.com has recently upgraded their search features. Since along with Google, the have opted for the "tons-o-white space and a search box" interface, the differences reside in the quality of results and little interface goodies each works in.

I really have never had Ask.com in the mix for my personal searching. My model is usually Google, then Clusty, then Yahoo.

Tried out their new stuff - was interesting.

REVIEW: Along Came a Spider - Alice Cooper

I am a complete Alice Cooper mark and would be hard pressed not to like anything he does. With that out of the way, my review of his latest work... "Along Came a Spider"....

At the end of the day, I really like this album. Probably Alice's best constructed concept work. There are hints of humor, but by and large this is pretty dark stuff. Every song is from the point of view of "Spider"... a serial killer... a pretty unpleasant one at that (not that there are exactly LIKABLE ones of course).

I could have used a break by means of a song sung from some other point a view - a victim, passerby, family member, Mayor McCheese, etc... 11 tracks of quality time with Spider can be somewhat of a bleak journey.

Alice has gone dark before (Brutal Planet, Dragontown), but always allowed us to come up for air by providing some comic relief ("Its the little things" on the former, "Disgraceland" on the latter).

Most of the first half of the album features a healthy dose of the snarling guitars and/or snarling Alice we have all come to know and love. Then things get quirky and some strange broadway/Lennon-esque/stadium anthem hybrids emerge.

Bottom line -- this album rocks, features Alice's WAY underrated wordplay, and is interesting.

We don't get that a lot anymore. Buy it. Help get Alice back on the charts. He deserves it.

Song comments....

  1. "Prologue / I Know Where You Live" - 4:21

I remember a review of the Who's "Its Hard" in Rolling Stone that said when fans first hear the "Just a girl, just a girl, just a girl" in Athena, they will be in Who Heaven. Well, when Alices kicks this song off with "I like to watch from my car"... Alice Heaven - totally.

  2. "Vengeance Is Mine" - 4:26

Slash appears on this song with the expected killer guitar results

  3. "Wake The Dead" - 3:53

"Send me a redhead, send me a brunette, send a blond to me. When I unwind, I'm colorblind, they're all the same to me".

Ozzy Osbourne co-wrote and play harmonic on this track. Probably my favorite track.

  4. "Catch Me If You Can" - 3:15

    Meh

  5. "(In Touch With) Your Feminine Side" - 3:16

"Its your world, but its my street".... sweet :)

  6. "Wrapped In Silk" - 4:17

The creepy apex of the story arc. The song seems to fight off a dual possession by AC/DC and Whitesnake during the chorus. Successfully. Eventually.

  7. "Killed By Love" - 3:34

    Ballad. 'nuff said. OK actually.

  8. "I'm Hungry" - 3:58

I love 88% of this song. Problem is, I can't get past hearing Spinal Tap's "Hell Hole" each time the "I'm Hungry!!" chorus rolls by.

  9. "The One That Got Away" - 3:21

Only Alice would kick off a love song with "You look like you'd fit in the trunk of my car". That is why he is a national treasure.

  10. "Salvation" - 4:36

Complex. Good. Not real Alice-y though -- it has moments that sound like the wrap up of an Andrew Lloyd Webber project. And Webber is the anti-Alice. Somewhat.

  11. "I Am The Spider / Epilogue" - 5:21

Welcome back Steven. We have missed you.

Defining social media marketing

At least I am winning the big states... NY, Texas, California, and Illinois all have been pretty kind to me.

I have always been an Alertbox fan. Now, a consistent follower of all the guidance they provide... not so much.

Graphic movies

I try to post examples I come across where graphics are used creatively to convey concepts (like the baseball map).

While Minard's work remains the king of the hill for me, this movie one is pretty cool.

No Street View for you!

Fort Sam Houston was available on the street view of Google Maps. The Pentagon complained. Google removed. Not sure I completely understand why a 100% publicly available line of sight had to be expunged - particularly since you can get this off the Fort's website - but no one asked :)

Thanks to this man I stayed up WAY to late with several like minded friends during high school summer vacations. Thanks Gary.

Top ten websites you never heard of....

Websites in 1996... oh my

Take a look back at what the state of the art was for websites in 1996. Does not seem all that long ago... until you view a few of these beauties.

A history of evil

Not sure exactly why Elvis is part of the chain of evil shown here (now, Yanni, that WOULD speak to me), but a clever little animation....

Web / Desktop blurrage

Google Gears, Prism, Silverlight, and now AIR from Adobe. The blurring of the web verses the desktop continues. Widgets, gadgets, portlets, applettes... kinda boggles my mind.

I am hopeful the most approachable solution (e.g. the one that lets the broadest audience use and understand) wins the day, but no clue where that will emerge from.

The market at work though. A good thing.

Mashing up Facebook and MySpace

Have not used it much, but came across Sociagami - a tool to blend your Facebook and MySpace profiles. Seems to be at least moderately useful.

And Pat, your were right, my enthusiasm has already ebbed for marumushi.com's newsmap

Career changing cartoons

Apparently, some management does not hold Dilbert in high regard and will even fire the poor soul who posts the wrong one on a bulletin board.

In order to support the free market, I feel it is important to note the while Dilbert is a very reliable source of career-ending material, other options exist. Came across this fine site with a the ever popular "Crap boss" category.

Enjoy - but don't blame me.

Vista and XP

Good read on the whole why people hate Vista and want to keep XP

I lack the passion of many on this topic, but it is interesting to listen to those who do have strong feelings. There is probably some Democratic primary parallel here ("Vista can only win caucus states - it is sooooooo unfair" or something like that) , but I can't seem to frame up a good one.

Keeping up on the news

I keep trying to find the easiest way to complete a quick scan of news articles. iGoogle, Feedburner, Digg, and Google News Alerts all have their positives... but I am laaaaaaaazy and I want it reeeeeeeeeal easy.

Since I am easy distracted by shiny objects and favor graphical solutions to complex problems, I think I might have found a keeper... marumushi.com's newsmap.

Thanks to Cheryl for sharing.

Online reputation help

Good read on services some companies are offering to help you manage your online reputation. Thanks to Joe for sharing.

Some interesting approaches here. Sometimes they try and load up a bunch of non-offensive links to push offending content down a few pages... sometimes they try and get the offending content taken down. The former seems like modified Google Bombing, the later faces the challenge of overcoming the amazing half life online content seems to have.

(I am proud to say a 10 year old comment I wish I had never typed- but was retained for public viewing via an AOL chat transcript - seems to have FINALLY washed away.)

Ultimately, I think these companies can help, but not totally solve this problem. Maybe the French have a some ideas here. I reccomend you do Google search on "French Military Victories" to see what they might have to offer on tweaking search results. I am sure the first result in the results will offer great insight.

I always enjoy the material Wired puts out in their multimedia section. Two recent fun ones...

Cheesy Star Trek creatures

Spore - looks like Maxis is gonna have a winner here!

Blue death in Vegas

A very public blue screen of death. Oh how I long for the days when when the occasional Video Toaster or Amiga desktop made brief appearances on local news :)

Mythbusters slo mo video

One of my many geek pleasures is the Discovery channel's "Mythbusters". They have a really interesting interactive video tool available on their site to play with material they have captured using high-speed cameras. Enjoy.

Google Apps - Team edition

Google has released the Team Edition of Google Apps that is intended to allow users to "share documents and calendars securely without burdening IT for support."

Hmmm, why do I have a nagging feeling IT might not view this through the same lens.

Apparently, there is no "IT" in "Team"... ok, there IS a "t". Sue me.

7 most annoying video game enemies

Hard to argue with this list of the most annoying enemies to run across in video games. Kinda surprised a room full of imps from the original Doom did not make the cut though.

Alice Cooper and Richard Simmons... hmmm, never typed THAT before

Such a good news, bad news moment.

Alice will be appearing, albino snake in tow, in a Superbowl commercial for Bridgestone Tires. While I still think the NFL is missing the boat in not securing him for part of the halftime performance, a Superbowl Commercial isn't too shabby.

Unfortunately, he will appear with Richard Simmons in this commercial. Kinda takes a bit of the luster off the deal. The premise....

What happens when a fitness icon, a rock legend and his slithery companion confront a speeding car equipped with the precision technology of Bridgestone-brand tires?

More info and a couple of screen shots are available on the Bridgestone media site.

Alice REALLY needs to evaluate the company he keeps. Golfing with David Cassidy in the 70s - and now this :)

Test your powers of observation

Fun little quiz to test your memory/power of observation.

19 for me with no cheating - tempting as it was.

Best I can tell only works in IE and not Firefox. Sorry about that.

Two fun images on the web...

The old - zoom into the paint flake level on the Last Supper

The new - source image that provided the "bigfoot on Mars"

Album dead?

Interesting post regarding the demise of albums by Mark Cuban (Blog Maverick). While you can't argue with the drop in sales, what Mark Cuban (Blog Maverick) incorrectly discounts is that certain artists - usually vintage I grant - create music that is to be enjoyed as a collection.

Sure, much of this comes from my Alice Cooper bias - "From the Inside", "Brutal Planet", "Alice Cooper goes to Hell" simply are better as a collection of songs than as a one by one product. Also, I might never have bought a single track off of Capt. Beefheart's "Trout Mask Replica" or Graham Parker's "Struck by Lightning" - but I gotta tell ya, but they grew on me after repeated plays.

Buy "The Wall" on an installment plan? I think not.

Mr. Cuban (Blog Maverick) also offers up this point of view:

My guess is that consumers will feel better about subscribing to an artist and getting a song a week or every 2 than dropping 10 dollars at a time for an album.

I guess if they are math challenged, or have the attention spans of dogs, that makes sense... but 99 cents paid out every two weeks eventually ends up around 10 bucks for 10 or 11 songs (or 18+ songs if you buy TMBG albums).

In fairness, the subscription idea does address the need to keep things simple. I would rather not have to scan the horizon for new stuff from favorite artists. Bundling them as albums helped me keep track - pretty sure subscriptions would too.

And any approach that would have let me opt out of "No More Love at your Convenience" off Alice's "Lacy & Whiskey" has some merit.

Going green by going black

With some iffy data to back it up, Blackle promotes the concept that moving from the stark white of Google to more of a "Google noir" could save oodles of energy. Sounds a bit to me like typing in lower case to save hard drive space, but who knows.

Reminds me of the First Citiwide Change Bank...

How do we make money doing this? The answer is simple. Volume.

Hello Kitty assault rifle.

Yes.

You read right.

A Hello Kitty assault rifle. Cute, in a internal organ destroying kinda way. Still favor the Darth Vader-Kitty brand extension :)

Being Jackson Pollock

In my quest to help others waste time, I have highlighted opportunities to fly a pig or destroy websites, but here is one that will not only VERY effectively gobble up time - but with the right printer and aggressive marketing - you might just become Jackson Pollock.

Don't forget to click your mouse once in awhile once you start painting.

Wikipedia/Wikia v. Google part deux (inversed) - Knol vs. Wikia

The fun continues. Since Wikipedia is trying to provide an alternative to Google in search via Wikia, now Google considers out wiki-ing Wikipedia with Knol.

Market forces at their best - we all win in the end as quality improves. Now, spelling (wikia? knol?), that is a different story

Roll your own RSS

Dapper is a pretty slick little tool do add RSS to a site that doesn't offer it. Easy to use. Worth playing with if you are so inclined. Thanks to Cheryl for the heads up on this.

Vintage technology ads

William Shatner, Commodore 64 (65K for $595!!!) , Burger Time, and a line dancing Link from Zelda... pretty fun stroll down memory lane with some vintage commercials.

Wikia and Google

Some time ago, I posted about the Wikipedia (Wika) search concept and how it may or may not compete with Google. Well, it is out. Got a good comment on my previous post extolling the "wisdom of crowds" and how it could indeed result in a better search. I would argue that the way Google uses links to set relevance is really a "wisdom of crowds" thing too - less direct, but that might not be all that bad. Still - point well taken.

The different thing here, is each day (at least in theory) Wikia will improve. Should be fun to watch and see.

Wi-fi virus risks

Interesting read on the concept of wi-fi based virus attacks. Anyone with a laptop and a wireless card has probably seen the surprisong large number of completely unsecured networks (often with the default SSID "linksys" or the like). Some folks take "plug and play" a bit too literal :)

I still recommend doing something

Mike Birbiglia needs you

Mike Birbiglia could use your help on the Comedy Central "Standup Showdown". I thought about writing something clever to encourage voters (it is like Chicago, you can vote multiple times - just have to wait a day each time), but then I realized being clever is kinda Mike's thing, so in his words...

Go to the comedy central website and vote for me in the Standup Showdown. I know it’s superficial but since I haven’t won anything since author of the month in 3rd grade, my self-esteem hinges directly on the results and right now I’m almost off the list! You can put it in bookmarks and vote once a day, or hire someone who knows how to outsmart computers to vote THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF TIMES PER DAY.

Purpose of the Internet - volume 2

Without the Internet I could not have patched Bioshock to work on my lame video card (more on that later - curse you shader 2.0), I could not have fixed various family laptop problems, I could not waste time regularly on YouTube... but all this pales when I see sites like this...

Missing something?
